Eight-year-old Fassikaw lives in Bahir Dar, where he goes to a local primary school. A second-grade student, he once faced challenges that threatened his education and well-being.

When Fassikaw was in first grade, he began to have trouble seeing objects far away. Reading books and the blackboard became difficult. Sitting in the middle or back of the classroom, he often had to borrow his classmates’ exercise books to copy notes.

At home, reading took him a long time. His eyes often watered, and his grades began to drop. More than his grades, his parents worried about his worsening vision and the way it was affecting his mood and sleep. Fassikaw even spoke about leaving school.

Around this time, his family learned about our School Eye Health Program run in partnership with Partners in Education Ethiopia. The program offers free diagnosis and eyeglasses to students in need.

After hearing this, his family went to the hospital and Fassikaw’s eyes were checked. At the hospital, tests revealed that Fassikaw’s vision required strong corrective lenses: +15.00 for his left eye and +16.00 for his right. Thanks to our partners and generous donors, he received the eyeglasses at no cost.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Fassikaw-2-webpp-1024x576.webp" alt=" Fassikaw wearing glasses sits on the same bench, reading the book at a comfortable distance with improved posture and focus.
Today, Fassikaw can read easily from anywhere in the classroom. At home, he reads without headaches or watery eyes. His grades have improved, and his class ranking has risen from 27th to 21st, with steady progress.

His father says their son is now happy and confident, and the family can sleep without worry. “With God’s help, we hope you will never have to worry about anything,” he says with gratitude.

Did you know?
Bringing eye health care to students is an investment in their education and their future. Globally, 450 million children have an eye condition that requires treatment; of these, 448 million have refractive errors that only require eye exams and eyeglasses (Source: IAPB Vision Atlas – Child Eye Health). The cost of eyeglasses in our countries of work is approximately C$20.

By providing eyeglasses through school-based eye health programs, we can transform the lives of children like Fassikaw, helping them see clearly, succeed in school and embrace a brighter future. Give the Gift of Sight today.

Our Work in Ethiopia
Since beginning our work in Ethiopia in 2018, we’ve made significant strides toward preventing avoidable vision loss. In 2024, our programs reached more than 33,424 people through eye health screenings, treatment, training and community outreach. From surveying over 14,000 residents in Debre Work to training frontline workers and teachers, screening students and providing eyeglasses, we are building lasting capacity for quality eye care.

One of the key pillars of our work is hospital strengthening. This means that we collaborate with hospital and government partners to ensure that hospitals have the resources necessary to provide quality eye health care. Our partner hospitals are identified based on the eye health needs of the areas they serve, and then they then go through a thorough vetting process to ensure suitability. Although we do work with hospitals to confirm that adequate facilities, equipment and supplies are available, the largest aspect of our hospital strengthening is training. In 2020 alone, we trained 139 people to provide eye health care. This included training primary health care workers in eye care and training ophthalmologists and eye health technicians in regions where these roles are in high demand.

Read a testimony from an Operation Eyesight-trained Vision Technician:

After decades of success using this method, we have been invited by ministries of health to present it as a proven way of addressing gaps in current eye health offerings in a number of countries, including Zimbabwe, Malawi, the Maldives and Sri Lanka. After seeing the impact of our programs on the lives of their citizens, we have been asked by the governments of Zambia and Arunachal Pradesh state in India to replicate our model in other parts of the country/state. In doing so, we share the principles of our model while still leaving room for adaptation to best meet local eye health needs and to successfully operate in the local cultural context. We also provide input on governments’ national eye health strategies, advocating for the inclusion of eye health in primary health care programs. This is a critical component of achieving universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Read about a day in the life of an Operation Eyesight program officer:

As a result of longstanding, trusting relationships that we have with our partners and with local ministries of health, we were able to adapt our approach quickly at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our locally-based program teams quickly mobilized to help our partners address the immediate concerns caused by the pandemic. This included reaching out to communities to provide clean water, safety supplies and education to help them protect their families and prevent the spread of the virus. These efforts helped prevent our partner hospitals from becoming overwhelmed, giving them support to help them get back to a state where they are facilitating better health outcomes, including eye health, for their citizens. The flexibility shown by our international team demonstrated that we have an important role to play to help our hospital partners manage health risks as they emerge, even those unrelated to eye health.

COVID-19 proved that access to health care and robust health systems are more important now than ever. That’s why our focus this year and beyond is to continue our work to strengthen hospitals, establish vision centres and improve access to eye health care. Our work would not be possible without support from our generous donors. Donate today to help us support our hospital partners and eliminate avoidable blindness. – For All the World To See!

Happy 2019!

It’s hard to believe that 2018 has come and gone, isn’t it? Time flies.

Last year people like you helped us reach thousands of people in need of eye care. Thank you for your support! So many people, like Elagonda from India, were helped through your generosity.

Here’s a letter Elagonda wanted us to share with you:

“My name is Elagonda. I’m 65 years old and live in India.

I’m not a wealthy person, and although I have two daughters who could help support me, they’re both married and have their own lives to attend to. What my family did have in savings was used to arrange their marriages into good families.

So I live alone… I lost my husband a few years ago, and I get by on a small pension from the government. When I can, I do some farming work to make a little more money. I depend on my eyes to earn my living, and I only realized to what extent when I started to lose my vision.

One day, my world was so dark that I couldn’t keep working. I had no other income, and I could barely survive on my pension.

Unexpectedly, one day a community health worker trained by Operation Eyesight was at my door. She screened my eyes and told me I had cataracts.

I was poor though. How could I afford the surgeries for my eyes? But the health worker told me that my treatment would be free of charge, thanks to Operation Eyesight’s kind-hearted donors.

After my surgery, I can see again! I can work and spend time with my friends and neighbours. I have hope again.

I sincerely thank the people who give their money to help people like me, even though they don’t know me. My sight has been restored – and with it, my happiness!”

This year, we hope you’ll help us reach more people like Elagonda with the gift of sight.

Here’s to everything we’ll do together in 2019!

Cheers to a new year!

It’s normal to think about blindness as a personal condition. After all, it’s easiest to imagine how it would affect your life. But for Surajkali, blindness stole not just her independence, but her 10-year old grandson’s, too.

Surajkali is 65 and from India. She lives in Rurwahar Village in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Her husband is a farmer while she manages their home. Two years ago, her eyesight began to fail. Eventually, she couldn’t see at all. Her grandson, Suraj, had to guide her around her home, to the store and even to the toilet.

Poor Surajkali! She could no longer do her chores and tasks, and poor Suraj, who had to drop out of school to care for his Grandmother. Surajkali needed him so constantly that he couldn’t play with his friends. Imagine how sad they both must have felt.

After her surgery, Surajkali’s vision was restored! Thanks to the support of people like you.

Luckily, Surajkali was visited by a community health worker. Going doorto-door, the worker was one of many workers trained under Operation Eyesight’s Community Eye Health model. In Kanpur, this is in partnership with Dr. Jawahar Lal Rohatgi Eye Hospital.

The community health worker identified Surajkali’s blindness as cataract. Surajkali had never heard of this condition. She’d feared she’d be blind forever. The worker advised Surajkali to seek surgery.

The cataract in both of Surajkali’s eyes were soon removed. Now she can see again, thanks to our amazing supporters! She has her independence back and can do her daily tasks. Meanwhile, Suraj has returned to school. He’s happy that he can go out and play with his friends, something every child should be able to do. What’s more, with an education, Suraj has hope for a brighter future. Imagine their joy!

Both Surajkali and Suraj have happy endings thanks to our supporters! We couldn’t do our work without their generosity. From us and everyone our supporters are helping, we say a giant THANK YOU!
