<p>Have you ever thrown a rock into a still pool of water and watched the ripples expand?&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>No matter the size of the stone, the impact spreads in widening circles.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The same is true in international development and eye health care.&nbsp;</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>How the ripple effect shaped our work in 2025</strong>&nbsp;</h4>

<p>Every gift of sight creates ripples that transform lives. For girls and boys, women and men, restored sight opens doors to education,&nbsp;employment&nbsp;and independence. Those benefits&nbsp;don’t&nbsp;stop there – they&nbsp;carry on, extending through&nbsp;families, communities and&nbsp;even the global&nbsp;economy:&nbsp;Vision loss costs&nbsp;an estimated <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/langlo/article/PIIS2214-109X(20)30488-5/fulltext" type="link" id="https://www.bing.com/search?pglt=675&amp;q=1.+M.+Burton%2C+“Lancet+Global+Health+Commission+on+Global+Eye+Health%3A+Vision+Beyond+2020%2C”+The+Lancet+Global+Health%2C+vol.+9%2C+no.+4%2C+pp.+e489–e551%2C+2021.&amp;cvid=d95f239e3d5b4bbeb5fab9284d60d2c6&amp;gs_lcrp=EgRlZGdlKgYIABBFGDkyBggAEEUYOTIICAEQ6QcY_FUyBwgCEOsHGEDSAQc3NTdqMGoxqAIAsAIA&amp;FORM=ANNAB1&amp;PC=U531">US $411 billion</a>&nbsp;in lost productivity each year, according to a 2021 article in The Lancelet Global Health Journal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2025, your support meant everything. It was a year when the “pool of water” was anything but still. Yet our global community&nbsp;came together. Your collective generosity created&nbsp;nothing short of seismic waves&nbsp;of&nbsp;impact across 10 countries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Every year, <a href="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/annualreport2024/" type="link" id="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/annualreport2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">your support empowers our teams and partners to screen&nbsp;millions of people</a>, provide&nbsp;hundreds of thousands of those with vision loss with prescription eyeglasses and perform hundreds of thousands of cataract surgeries&nbsp;(2025 data and details will be shared in our 2025 annual report).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thank you for standing in solidarity with us, with communities, and with our teams and partners around the world <strong><em>– For All the World to See!</em></strong> </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2025&nbsp;Highlights</strong>&nbsp;</h3>

<p>Here are some of our&nbsp;2025 milestones and accomplishments&nbsp;that were achieved&nbsp;thanks to your&nbsp;support.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Global&nbsp;</strong>&nbsp;</h4>

<p><strong>Impact recognition</strong>&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image167460_78b093-ee size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="536" src="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Top-10-overall-impact-1024x536.png" alt="" class="kb-img wp-image-167463" srcset="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Top-10-overall-impact-1024x536.png 1024w, https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Top-10-overall-impact-450x236.png 450w, https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Top-10-overall-impact-768x402.png 768w, https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Top-10-overall-impact.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>For the eighth consecutive year, Operation Eyesight was named a&nbsp;<a href="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/operation-eyesight-2025-top-10-impact-charity-2025/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Top 10 Impact Charity</a> by Charity Intelligence Canada.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Growing global reach</strong></p>

<p>We doubled traffic to our global website, raising awareness about the importance of eye health and how it impacts lives, communities and countries.</p>

<p><strong>Cataract surgery success</strong></p>

<p>With your support, we raised $410,000 CAD for our nine-country cataract surgery initiative, surpassing our $405,000 goal. This will fund an additional 5,400 cataract surgeries, some of which are already underway. For each country, this means the following additional cataract surgeries:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>400 in each of Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Liberia, Malawi and Nepal</li>

<li>1,000 in Ghana</li>

<li>900 in India</li>

<li>800 in Kenya</li>

<li>700 in Zambia</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>Why it matters: </strong>Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. One surgery, including supports such as travel, costs approximately $75 CAD. Cataract surgery is one of the most cost-effective health interventions, according to the <a href="https://visionatlas.iapb.org/topics/causes-of-sight-loss/">IAPB Vision Atlas</a>. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image167460_980543-0c size-medium"><img decoding="async" width="450" height="300" src="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/2024_BANGLADESH_beneficiaries_Saidur_DSC05627-1-450x300.jpg" alt="" class="kb-img wp-image-167464" srcset="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/2024_BANGLADESH_beneficiaries_Saidur_DSC05627-1-450x300.jpg 450w, https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/2024_BANGLADESH_beneficiaries_Saidur_DSC05627-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/2024_BANGLADESH_beneficiaries_Saidur_DSC05627-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/2024_BANGLADESH_beneficiaries_Saidur_DSC05627-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/2024_BANGLADESH_beneficiaries_Saidur_DSC05627-1-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/2024_BANGLADESH_beneficiaries_Saidur_DSC05627-1-1568x1045.jpg 1568w" sizes="(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px" /></figure>

<p><strong>Saidur’s story shows how cataract surgery changes lives. </strong>At 70, Saidur, from Bangladesh, was nearly blind and unable to work. After cataract surgery, he said, <em>“I am very happy to be able to see my grandchildren. I can finally earn a living again.” </em>&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXRysTK9oBA">Watch his ripple effect story.</a></p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Africa</strong></h4>

<p><strong>Ethiopia</strong></p>

<p>A World Sight Day school eye health initiative led to the screening of 1,200 students in Bahir Dar City. Students in need also received free prescription eyeglasses.</p>

<p><strong>Kenya</strong></p>

<p>With new funding from <a href="https://www.jnj.com/">Johnson &amp; Johnson</a>, we launched our <a href="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/our-approach/">Hospital-Based Community Eye Health Model</a> in four underserved counties. Tens of thousands of people have already participated in door-to-door screenings, and more than 2,000 cataract surgeries will be performed. See how this project brings eye health care closer to home in rural areas.</p>

<p>In a small village in <a href="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/nepal-bangladesh/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bangladesh</a>, 60-year-old Gulbahar lives alone and supports herself. She works as a maid, stretching every ounce of strength to make it through each day.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2024_BANGLADESH_beneficiaries_Gulbahar_DSC04049-1024x683.jpg" alt="Gulbahar stands in line with other patients at the Operation Eyesight eye care camp in rural Bangladesh. <p>Her world grew darker as <a href="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/avoidable-blindness/cataracts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cataracts</a> began to cloud her vision and left her nearly blind. Everyday things like walking through crowded streets, cooking with the right spices and finding her way around her home became uncertain and difficult.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Despite the challenges, her spirit stayed strong as she searched for the right eye health treatment, only to discover that the surgery she needed was far beyond what she could afford.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One day she heard about a nearby outreach eye care camp by Operation Eyesight. Gulbahar made her way to the camp and embraced the chance for cataract surgery.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Today Gulbahar is back on her feet. She works and moves through her days with confidence and no longer depends on others. Her restored vision gave her more than sight. It gave her freedom.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But stories like Gulbahar’s are far too common.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Horibala, from the village of Godashimla, Bangladesh, likes to keep busy. The 65-year-old finds joy and motivation in her favourite pastimes: sewing and travel.</p>

<p>But for years, she was unable to enjoy these activities as her eyes clouded over with cataracts.</p>

<p>“I couldn’t see at all,” she recalls. “Even when I closed one eye to see anything, it was blurry. I felt helpless.”</p>

<p>As her eyesight faded, she found herself depending on others for almost everything. Simple tasks like washing clothes, making a meal or even lighting the cooking stove were impossible.</p>

<p>Things turned around for Horibala after a visit from an optometrist from the Madarganj Vision Centre, run by our partners at <a href="https://symbiosis.org.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Symbiosis International</a>, who was doing a door-to-door survey. The optometrist referred Horibala to our partner institute, the <a href="https://drkzamanbnsbeh.org.bd/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. K. Zaman BNSB Eye Hospital</a> in the nearby city of Mymensingh, for bilateral cataract surgery.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="506" src="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/2024_BANGLADESH_beneficiaries_Horibala_DSC05483-Enhanced-NR_web.webp" alt="A man hands another man a pair of glasses, while a third man and a woman look on." class="wp-image-164171" srcset="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/2024_BANGLADESH_beneficiaries_Horibala_DSC05483-Enhanced-NR_web.webp 900w, https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/2024_BANGLADESH_beneficiaries_Horibala_DSC05483-Enhanced-NR_web-450x253.webp 450w, https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/2024_BANGLADESH_beneficiaries_Horibala_DSC05483-Enhanced-NR_web-768x432.webp 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Horibala queues up for a checkup at the Madarganj Vision Centre.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Thanks to the generous support of donors like you, her sight was finally restored.</p>

<p>The medication she received at her follow-up appointments relieved the discomfort of watery eyes after surgery. Soon, she regained her ability to see.</p>

<p>“Now, I can do everything. There’s a big difference between being able to see and not seeing at all,” she says. “For the past year, I’ve been able to work, sew and even travel. My life feels normal again.”</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="506" src="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/2024_BANGLADESH_beneficiaries_Horibala_DSC05550-Enhanced-NR_web-1.webp" alt="A woman sits in her kitchen lighting a cooking fire." class="wp-image-164169" srcset="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/2024_BANGLADESH_beneficiaries_Horibala_DSC05550-Enhanced-NR_web-1.webp 900w, https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/2024_BANGLADESH_beneficiaries_Horibala_DSC05550-Enhanced-NR_web-1-450x253.webp 450w, https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/2024_BANGLADESH_beneficiaries_Horibala_DSC05550-Enhanced-NR_web-1-768x432.webp 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Horibala lights the cooking stove at her home in Godashimla, Bangladesh.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Now overflowing with gratitude for her regained sight, Horibala acts as an advocate in her community, encouraging people to take care of their eyes.</p>

<p>“I tell everyone: if you have an eye problem, don’t wait. Go to this hospital and get treated immediately. Being able to see again is priceless!”</p>

<p>As a community health volunteer, 28-year-old Faizunnahar spends her days bringing primary eye health care to the doorsteps of families who live in her area. She enjoys her job, but she knows that not everyone in her community approves of her work. In rural Bangladesh, where Faizunnahar lives, job opportunities for women are often limited by societal norms, and those who step outside of traditional roles often face criticism.</p>

<p>Nevertheless, with her family’s support, the young volunteer persists. She loves making an impact in her community, and she is proud to contribute to the family finances through the monthly stipend she earns. She is determined to build a better life for herself, her family and their young son.</p>

<p>Working with our partner organization, <a href="https://symbiosis.org.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Symbiosis International</a>, Faizunnahar goes door to door in nearby communities doing preliminary eye screenings and referring those with vision problems to the nearby Madarganj Vision Centre.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1025" height="577" src="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/2024_BANGLADESH_CHW_Faijunnahar_DSC05717-Enhanced-NR-6.webp" alt="A woman holds up an eye chart to a man. They are standing outside of a family home." class="wp-image-164014" style="object-fit:cover" srcset="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/2024_BANGLADESH_CHW_Faijunnahar_DSC05717-Enhanced-NR-6.webp 1025w, https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/2024_BANGLADESH_CHW_Faijunnahar_DSC05717-Enhanced-NR-6-450x253.webp 450w, https://oearchive.swoondev.site/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/2024_BANGLADESH_CHW_Faijunnahar_DSC05717-Enhanced-NR-6-768x432.webp 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1025px) 100vw, 1025px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Faizunnahar screens a man for visual acuity , Bangladesh.</em></figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>As a child, Faizunnahar remembers her father struggling with an eye problem. To get it treated, he had to travel from their village of Ruknai to the capital city Dhaka, nearly 200 kilometres away. His difficulties in getting treatment for his vision problems stayed with her and would later inspire her to seek out work in the healthcare sector.</p>

<p>When she first heard about the opportunity to become a community health volunteer, Faizunnahar worked quickly to reach out to a contact and put together a resume. After writing an exam, she was excited to learn she got the job. Since then, she has worked in maternal, newborn and child health, as well as primary eye care, for which we provided the training. She is proud of her achievements and says her greatest joy comes from knowing that her work is helping transform lives.</p>

<p>This <a href="https://www.internationalwomensday.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">International Women’s Day</a>, we celebrate the thousands of women like Faizunnahar who are breaking barriers to help us deliver essential eye health care at the community level. As community health workers/volunteers, they have an opportunity to become leaders in their communities and act as catalysts for positive health outcomes. This employment improves their ability to become active participants in their family’s socioeconomic stability.</p>

<p><strong>You can help support our mission to achieve gender equality in eye health care by sharing this post with friends and family, by <a href="https://oearchive.swoondev.site/2024/gender-inequalities-in-vision-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">learning more about the issues</a> or by <a href="https://give.operationeyesight.com/page/WomensDay2025?utm_source=DM1&amp;utm_medium=Blog&amp;utm_campaign=WomensDay2025" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">making a donation</a>.</strong></p>
